Goryokaku

Goryokaku (五稜郭)

Information: The name of Goryokaku came from that star shape ( Gokakkei in Japanese) . It was built in 1864 ,which was three years before Meiji era started, and was the last battlefield of Boshin war(1868-1869) ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boshin_War). During the Meiji Restoration in 1868 ended the feudalistic Tokugawa shogunate continued for 256 years, Toshizo Hijikata , one of the main member of Shinsengumi, entered this fort to fight? against? the new army of Japan but fell. Now this area is opened as a park.
